Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid. It is used as a flavor enhancer with an umami (savory) taste that is often added to meats, canned vegetables, soups, and Chinese food. Consuming too much MSG to quickly can lead to ‘Chinese restaurant syndrome.’ It’s that feeling you get after you stuff yourself at a Chinese buffet. Other adverse effects reported over the years include:
- Facial pressure or tightness
- Numbness, tingling, or burning in face and neck
- Rapid, fluttering heartbeats
- Chest pain
The best way to prevent a reaction is to avoid foods with MSG.
Sodium is a natural element that we need to control blood pressure and volume. Sodium is also important in the function of our muscles and nerves. Sodium’s most common form is in the table salt we are all familiar with.
Numerous reports by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the American Heart Association, and Time have identified that our sodium intake is well above a healthy level, and that most of it is coming from processed foods. Too much salt can put one at risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. For more information check out the Sodium Fact Sheet
Gluten is a protein composite found in wheat, barely, rye, and all their species and hybrids. It has been known to cause health problems to those suffering from coeliac disease, non-coeliac gluten sensitivity, wheat allergy, among others. For those afflicted by these conditions, removing gluten is an effective way to reduce abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, acid reflux disease, and other gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. Some reports claim that removing gluten from your diet will help with headache, migraines, fatigue, muscle pain, anxiety, and autoimmune diseases.
